AND THE WINNER IS …
The School Theatre Festival 2010 at the National Theatre Vienna (Burgtheater) brought the first prize of the jury for our coproduction “The Kick”: The first Viennese Theatre Oscar! The pupils have dedicated phenomenal motivation, outstanding skill, brilliant talent and relentless energy to this project to make things happen and shape this project into a thunderous success. After four days of festival fever, four days of jitters, four days of theatre non-stop, and seven performances the decision as to the winner is final: The first Viennese Theatre Oskar goes to the theatre group Theaterw@lz/Kappa (w@lz, Wiener LernZentrum) and their production of »Der Kick« by Andreas Veiel and Gesine Schmidt. The award ceremony was a glamorous show put together by the theatre year of the “Junge Burg” (young National theatre) and took place at the Kasino at Schwarzenbergplatz. The Jury, represented by Maria Happel, lauded the artistically clear and sociopolitically engaged interpretation: »By boldy reducing the staging exclusively to the level of performance you have succeeded in creating an acutely dense atmosphere that captured the audience and convincingly conveyed the tormenting message of the play – catastrophes happened next to us, among us.« The First School Theatre Festival took place under the auspices of Dr. Claudia Schmied (Austrian Austrian Federal Minister for Education, Arts and Culture) and with support by BAWAG P.S.K.

Das 1. SchülerTheaterTreffen am Burgtheater endete am Samstag mit der Verleihung des 1. TheaterOskars im Kasino am Schwarzenbergplatz für unsere Koproduktion von “Der Kick” . Die Schüler haben diesem Projekt phänomenale Motivation, tiefe Erfahrung, hervorragendes Talent und unbarmherzige Energie gewidmet, um diese Aufführung so zu ermöglichen und diesem Projekt einen so stürmischen Erfolg zu bescheren. Einen grossen Dank an alle Beteiligten!

Nach vier Tagen Festivalfieber, vier Tagen Lampenfieber und vier Tagen Theater nonstop mit sieben Aufführungen steht der Gewinner fest: In Rahmen einer fulminanten Show, gestaltet vom Theaterjahr der Jungen Burg, ging der 1. TheaterOskar gestern Abend im Kasino am Schwarzenbergplatz an die Theatergruppe Theaterw@lz/Kappa 12 des w@lz Wiener LernZentrum mit ihrer Inszenierung von „Der Kick“ von Andreas Veiel und Gesine Schmidt.
Die Jury, vertreten durch Schauspielerin Maria Happel, lobte die künstlerisch klare und gesellschaftspolitisch engagierte Realisierung: „Mit der mutigen Reduktion auf eine ausschließlich darstellerische Ebene habt Ihr eine überaus dichte Atmosphäre geschaffen, die die Zuschauer gefangen nahm, und die beklemmende Aussage des Stückes - die Katastrophen passieren neben, unter uns allen – künstlerisch überzeugend und emotional berührend umsetzte“.
Das 1. SchülerTheaterTreffen fand unter der Schirmherrschaft von Dr. Claudia Schmied, Bundesministerin für Unterricht, Kunst und Kultur, statt, mit Unterstützung der BAWAG P.S.K.

The KICK - a didactic play on violence

In the night of the 13th of July 2002, 16 year old Marinus is dying as a result of cruelties in his own hometown Potzlow, Germany. The criminals live in the same village, are the same age and belong to the same clique, like their victim. This action inevitably raises various questions: How could this violence arrive to the community, what are the motives, what is to be told about the criminals, the victim and the social and political environment?
The theatre play of Andreas Veiel and Gesine Schmidt is based on a true story. The two authors counted text documents, added minutes of the involved - active and passive - actors of the story, and created a haunting documentary setting. Without giving answers, the authors are decoding sequences of violence, happening among us, any time.

Central questions
Which communication structures frame the representation of violence after the violent act?
How can we represent violence in our own biographies?
There is a violence which is utterly unimaginable to us.
In researching the play “Der Kick” (Andreas Veiel; publishing Fischer, Germany) together with pupils, the collective of Kernzone 100, together with the pedagogue Jürgen Matzat, will take on the background work and the biographic-scenic character analysis of the 18 biographic characters in the play. The script serves as material for an own adaptation. Priority is given to the analysis of violence, fear, silence, and loneliness. The pupils are guided to their personal interpretation of the characters by different writing techniques (questionnaires, diary, dialogue development, speech formation), object theatre, reflections on the emotional level of the play, and scenic improvisation. Frauke Steiner, artistic director, is responsible for the coordination within Kernzone 100.

DER KICK - ein Lehrstück über Gewalt
von Andres Veiel und Gesine Schmidt
In Potzlow, einem Dorf in der Uckermark, stirbt in der Nacht zum 13. Juli 2002 der 16-jährige Marinus an den Folgen von Misshandlungen. Die Täter kommen aus dem gleichen Dorf, sind gleichaltrig und gehören der gleichen Clique wie ihr Opfer an. Unweigerlich wirft diese Tat viele Fragen auf: Wie kam es zu dieser Gewalt, was war der Anlass, was lässt sich über die Täter, das Opfer und das Umfeld sagen?
Das Theaterstück von Andreas Veiel und Gesine Schmidt beruht auf einer wahren Begebenheit. Die beiden Autoren sammelten dazu Textdokumente und fügten die Gesprächsprotokolle der Täter, der Clique und der Eltern zu einer eindringlichen Textfassung zusammen. Ohne fertige Antworten zu liefern, entschlüsseln sie mit diesem Dokument eine lange Kette der Gewalt, wie sie jederzeit und überall verübt werden könnte.

Zentrale Fragestellungen:
In welchen Kommunikationsstrukturen manifestiert sich Gewalt nach der Gewalttat?
Wie darstellbar ist Gewalt innerhalb meiner eigenen Biografie?
Es gibt Gewalt, die ist für uns un-vorstell-bar.
In der Forschungsarbeit mit SchülerInnen zu dem Stück “Der Kick” (Andres Veiel im Fischer Verlag) übernimmt das Kollektiv die Hintergrundarbeit sowie die biografisch-szenische Figurenarbeit zu den 18 biografischen Figuren des Stückes an der Seite des Pädagogen Jürgen Matzat. Die Textvorlage wird als Material zu einer eigenen Bearbeitung herangezogen. Die Auseinandersetzung mit Gewalt, Angst, Schweigen und Einsamkeit stehen dabei im Vordergrund. Mittels Schreibarbeit (Fragebögen, Tagebuch, Dialogentwicklung, Spracharbeit), Objekttheater, Reflexion der emotionalen Ebene des Stückes sowie durch szenische Improvisation wird den SchülerInnen ein persönlicher Zugang zu den Figuren gelegt. Verantwortlich für die Koordination innerhalb Kernzone 100 ist die künstlerische Leiterin Frauke Steiner.
